Nelson Street Bridge Design - Train Frequencies
3rd Year Studio.
Partners: Liam Bursey/ Harrison Lane.
As a Group exploration of the tectonics of bridge structures, this pedestrian mass timber suspension bridge has been designed to replace the Nelson Street Bridge in Sudbury Ontario which crosses over the downtown’s main train hub. Previously a thoroughfare for motorists crossing from Ramsey Lake and Bell Park to the downtown core spanning over railway tracks and linking Edmund Street to Elgin Street, the Nelson Street Bridge was a popular travel route in the Sudbury area before the Paris Street Bridge of Nations was built. Now, the structure stands as a pedestrian bridge linking the two sides.
This project seeks to redesign the bridge in order to draw in more foot traffic to the area, reconnecting its popular destinations by implementing a design that celebrates its historic importance.

Reflected in its structure, the organic form of this bridge takes on the gesture of a conch shell or the cupping motion of hands; intended to capture and enhance the sound frequencies dispersed by train movement below to connect its users to the unique nature of its Northern Ontario setting.
