Independent Landscape Research Project

Green Roof Revitalization.

Green roof Landscape Design

An independent landscape design project aiming to revitalize the deteriorating rooftop garden of the McEwen School of Architecture; serving as an example for the city council aiming to prove the potential of green roofs within the city of Sudbury and their ability to produce locally grown foods.

The green roof was designed to be an essential part of the school, however, due to its lack of maintenance it failed to thrive, thus I was hired during the summer to kick start its revitalization; researching, planting native species, maintaining, and documenting its progress. As of since local bird species have been documented nesting on the rooftop.

A large part of this design involved allowing users to access parts of the roof without disturbing its sensitive ecosystem, resulting in spatial nodes between the plantings to provide comfort for both human and non-human inhabitants. This approach to design allows for a sensitive and educational approach to ecosystems.

With the revitalization of the roof, the potential for it to be incorporated back into the school’s programming developed, now serving as an additional classroom space for the school of Architecture’s environmental courses, in addition to housing previous school projects to extend their lifecycle by providing eco-based products with a location to decompose naturally.

All vegetative species introduced to this ecosystem are native to the area and serve both as educational purposes as well as habitats for local species.
