Ecology Centre.
2nd Year Studio
This two-part Ecological Centre encourages users to participate in Sudbury’s Environmental efforts while gaining an understanding of the recovering ecosystems of the surrounding area. Located on Lake Laurentian, a significant outdoor space for the Laurentian University, the local chalet has been chosen as in need of a redesign, from a nature chalet into educational ecology centre for both students and visitors.
The newly proposed Ecological Centre will allow users to participate in the city’s regreening efforts by providing a location to grow and plant local species for its city while serving as an educational resource for the community.
Concept.
The first building; the Chalet, is located upon the previous nature Chalet’s foundation, responding to the general facilities of the site and reducing environmental impact.
The second building; the Greenhouse classroom, is situated within the forested area to ensure close proximity to the surrounding landscape.
Site Analysis.
A group site analysis was done in order to properly situate the buildings on-site in response to the surrounding landscape conditions.
As a result, the Greenhouse classroom has been situated atop the hill, offering direct access to the outdoors in order to ensure proper planting locations for the greenery produced by the students.
